on to the button bands!

Hi All!


i've been a lurker for too long with a CHP on the needles! I've just finished the hood and am in the process of picking up the button band stitches... I found that I was 8 over the 150 I should have picked up but figured that I would just work em' in. I'm hoping that it's common to get some few extra stitches, especially when I am almost positive my row gauge was a skew off...


I'm using the Classic Elite Silke Tweed and so far haven't really made any modifications. I figured I need the practice with seaming. Speaking of, what have people done for the hood? Just the simple grafting from the outside or have people done anything inside out?

I'm thrilled with the way this has been coming out and I'm so eager to finish and sport this puppy out!

Pattern: Central Park Hoodie from Knit Scene (Vogue Knitting)
Pattern Modifications: Shortened the ribbing. Used larger armhole directions and and larger sleeves (around). Sewed the hood down so it would be a little less pointy.
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Donegal Tweed ~12 balls
Yarn Source: Knitter's Palette
Needles: US Size 4 and 6 Addi Turbos
Zippers/Toggles: None for now. Might add some later.
Yarn Bought on January 14, 2007/Project finished January 28, 2007 (a personal best)
What I would change: Might add pockets. Would pick up fewer stitches for the button band. I picked up 160 which resulted in a slightly ruffled hood.

My Start...

Wow - this is going a lot faster than I expected! (It's my first sweater!) I'm already almost at the 14" required to cast off for sleeve shaping and I started last week. I finished one of my seven balls of Galway Heather in dark green (not as blue as in the photo). Sadly I have to put away the sweater for a week or so to get a good start on a pair of socks I promised for my friend! I won't leave it for long though...this is fun!

Toggles... and progress.

I'm wondering where everyone has bought their toggles and what size they went with? I'm having a terrible time finding them in real life, so I'll probably buy online but I'm not sure how big I should get. Any input?

As for my CPH (s) .... I started a second one in wool ease for a friend's daughter and have one sleeve done and blocking and the other sleeve is almost done. I hope to cast on for the body (in one piece) later today or tomorrow. I'm placing my bets on not ever finishing my first CPH. Oh, did I forget to mention that little tidbit?! :-) My first is patiently waiting to be finished--second sleeve cap and the hood is all. The yarn scares me. Anyway, here's a photo about half through the first sleeve of #2:

I joined the knitalong about a month ago? But I am only now posting. I just finished the back and I am currently knitting the left front. This sweater is just knitting up so easy. I love seeing every ones progress and finished sweaters. I hope to see more of them in the future. Here is my progress.

My CPH Hoodie Sleeves

I finished the frontof my Central Park Hoodie and I only hope it's wide enough. I put in deeper armholes so I could use the larger sleeves and now I'm working on those. It feels like I'm almost done, but there is a lot of yarn left and I probably will use 2/3 of the remaining six balls. There's most of a ball attached to the hood, about one ball remaining between the two sleeves and 4 in the bag. I will probably use at least one, if not two to finish up the hood and button bands. It would be great to have some yarn leftover. If I do, I'm not sure whether I'll return it or knit matching fingerless gloves. Now, what did I do with my copy of Knit Scene?

On to the button bands!

I finished the hood! I grafted the top. Now to pick up all the stitches for the front ribbing/button bands. It will be one long pickup - from the front right, around the hood, and down to the front left. Guess I'll squash 'em all on one needle?

After blocking the big front/back piece, I discovered I was off one stitch on my gauge. One stitch every 4 inches ends up being 11 stitches too wide - a bit over 2 inches wider on the finished width! (Who'd have thought it would make that much difference?!) The sleeves, which I did first as my gauge swatch, are right on. I must have relaxed a bit as I knit along...

I like the fit anyway. I think I'll wear this alot as an outdoor intermediate weather kind of sweater. And in Minnesota, there's a lot of that intermediate weather!

Finally finished

This counts as my first FO for the new year.

Although I am not quite happy with the size as it is a little bit too big, perfect for wearing over a jumper, but I wanted it to wear instead of a jumper so I will knit this again in the same colour,and two sizes smaller. I have enough yarn to do that, I just love the yarn and it has been a pleasure to knit. But no way will I rip it out - the thought did cross my mind though. Next time I am going to try knitting the back and the fronts at the same time. Sewing it up was a pain.



Yarn: Bendigo Mills 12 ply Rustic in Damson, size 48.

I loved making it so much that I have cast on one for my daughter. this is going so fast because it is in the smallest size so she will have room to grow into it. Changes this time around will be a 3 needle bind off at the shoulders.

Hi I am new here

Hi all

I have just joined the cph kal and I am really looking forward to seeing all your work. Please post pictures :)

I have only just finished the back and started on the left front. It is slow going for me, only a few rows each day, but I can't wait to get this done and hopefully I can wear it for spring.

I have done mine in red, and I have seen a few others in red also, looks really good. I also like to see the colours that others have done. My daughter wants me to do one for her in dark grey, but I told her she has to try mine on first to see if she will wear it, because she is a teenager and very picky, and I don't want to put all that work into a sweater that she won't wear.

So here is mine so far.......

And the Knit Goes On

I'm working on my CPH, but unfortunately only a few rows every day, I really need to pick up the pace on this.

As you see in the photo, I"m knitting the back and both sleeves on a 32" circular, just to be sure that I don't lose interest along the way and have whole pieces left behind to wither away in my knitting bag. I intend to do the same with the L/R fronts. I'm enjoying the progress reports so far, and congrats to Marywary on a beautiful finish! I notice comments here and elsewhere about modifications, and that's already giving me the heebie jeebies. This will be my first full size garment for myself, and I'm just hoping that the pattern fits well as written. If anything, I may extend the back and fronts, but only if I can be sure that there isn't some complex calculation that I might miss and throw the whole thing off.

I must be an idiot because...

I've read Cara's post about 4 times and I still don't understand what she believes she did wrong when starting CPH. Could someone enlighten me? I've finished the back of mine and am 7" into the left front. I personally added two stitches for a seam allowances, but I always do that on sweaters that will be seamed later if they aren't included in the instructions. So I'm not really understanding why she felt she needed to start with purls in the ribbing, when it does call for K2, P2. ? (check the third paragraph of her post from today). I am not trying to be a jerk at all..I really want to know if I have done something wrong with my sweater in the ribbing!

i'm so freaking in love with this sweater, and i've hardly started it.


it's going so smoothly and the yarn (peace fleece in sea moss) is wonderful! this is going to be a very warm, very comfy sweater.

I just joined the CPH Knit Along - I broke down and bought the yarn over the weekend as a b-day gift to myself. I've got Debbie Bliss Donegal Tweed in a grey blue (pictures to come later). Fortunately, I work at a yarn store part-time, so I got a little discount. On the other hand, working at a yarn shop DOES NOT SAVE YOU MONEY.

I've started on the back and have shortened the length (in the ribbing) by 1/2 an inch. I've got plans to knit the 14" sleeves, despite the fact that I'm making the 36. So I decreased as if I were knitting the 14" sleeves and am praying that it doesn't make it to narrow. I also have a grandiose idea of adding little slant pockets to the front.

oh the hidden spell of the sweater never-to-be-finished is over!!
this took the wholeness of my winterbreak (i started exactly a month ago)
i used classic elite skye tweed in spruce green was is?
and yay i'm happy. maybe i'll put some sky blue ribbons into it (i'm a fan of ribbons)

intentional changes made from pattern:
i did make it longer by 1/2 inch for the body and i did short-row shaping for 3 needle bind-off at the shoulders, i also did a three needle bind-off for the top of the hoodie b/c i'm lazy? (eh, dunno if it's supposed to be done, ohwell. i did add a row to compensate)

un-intentional changes: so i actually misinterpreted something on the decreasing for the sleeve-cap, and didn't notice until i did it right on the second sleeve, so eh just kept it, it's only 2 rows that are missing

also: this sweater does run on the small side for the arms...beware? try it out? i dunno. and i thought omg! the front-sides are so small!! but then you add that edging and it finishes it off...could totally add button (though doesn't seem so on the pic)

so yah... first sweater!!! i think before this i made the earflap beanie in the same issue of knitscene, and before that i made like a scarf? this is a big step! one more pic is on my blog (marywary on the sidebar), and ugh this is an awful pic of me b/c i'm sick!

Maybe I'll finish this time...

I had originally knit up the majority of the CPH back in the 'original' KAL, but got sidetracked because I'm envisioning trouble seaming. In typical fashion, I decided to avoid rather than complete it!! The photo shows mostly what I have done so far... I don't have a picture of the sleeves, but one is done and blocked, the other is in the sleeve cap shaping, and the body of the cardigan (knit in the round as one piece) has been seamed at the shoulders (3 needle bind off) since the photo. I still have just a tad more on the second sleeve and the hood. I'm using Rowan Yorkshire Tweed Aran which is really a great yarn! Ebay special, so it was pretty cheap, all things considered. If I ever finish this one, I might try to make another in Wool Ease for a friend.

Hello ... and help!

Hi there - I stopped knitting CPH over Christmas with all the pressies I had to knit. Well I'm back to it [back is done] and I'm stuck!

Left Front at the Neck stage.

It says 'keeping in pattern, BO 1 st at neck edge every other row 3 times' - does this mean BO 1 st every neck edge row, or every other neck edge row? Please help!

I'm trying to update my blog with progress pics, but it's just not having it today! Coming soon :)

Lunchtime Knitting

Hi, new to the CPH KAL...After frogging another sweater pattern one too many times, I went back to my original choice, the CPH. This is my progress during Thursday's lunch hour. I found out about this KAL just yesterday, so joined for the motivation, inspiration and support to get 'er done. So far, I love the pattern and I'm actually about halfway to the armholes now. I'll wait until I get further to post again. Cheers!

Still trying!!!!

I was sailing on the left front and had made a simple change of adding 14 sts so it would cross over with no gapping as shown by model,I like to keep my tummy warm too!
Everything wa going fine,I thought I would have it finished that night whne I decided to check measuements again,well...it looked like it was was going to be bigger,much bigger so I had redo the thing again,bugger.Everypiece I hav done so far I have done twice,either I am just plain silly or I have bad luck running against this project!
Not to be defeated I am enjoying it immensly and have even ordered two more lots of yarn,some Rowan Aran Tweed and Jo Sharp Aran,one in a red tone(I hope) and the other in Alabasternow. Will decide later if both these go on to be the same pattern or just a variation.
No piccies till I have abit more done,the speed of other knitters is astounding and also encouragement for me as its exciting to see all these CPH in the making!!!

Half done?

I began my Central Park Hoodie just before Christmas. I'm working on a few projects, so I'm not as far as I had hoped. I loved looking at everyones Hoodies so much, I just had to join in and make one for me. I'm using the Tahki Donegal Tweed called for, purchased from someone elses stash off Ebay, so the price is right!

I did the sleeves first (giant swatches). Now I'm doing the body in one piece - I hate to seam. Last night I finished the right front and began the back. I may take out the bind off on the right front and just short row the last few rows so I can do a three needle bindoff. Like I say, I hate to seam!


I'm alternating work on my sweater with work on a different sweater for my husband, so my progress will probably not be too swift. But I'm certainly enjoying this sweater!

ARRGH!!!

It has been a dark, rainy, stay in the house sort of day here in Ohio, so I spent most of it knitting my first sleeve of my CPH.

When I was more than half way done, I read the pattern for about the millionth time and realized that I wasn't increasing enough. I was only adding a new stitch to the end of the rows instead of the beginning AND the end. I had to frog the whole thing alllll the way back to the ribbing. Very depressing....I haven't ever had to rip that much out before on anything, but I really want to be able to wear this sweater!

Hi I am New to the Knit along...

Hi, I've probably been a member of the KAL for about 2 weeks, but never posted. I just received the pattern and the yarn and just cast on. I am loving it already. I live in New York City with my sister for now. Above is what i did this morning while at the laundry mat. The yarn I am using is Tahki New Tweed and the color is a gorgeous tealish blue color. Seeing everybody's hoodies has really inspired me.

Back is Done

Well, after some diversions around Christmas, including a failed adult Tomten for myself, I'm back with the CPH and devoted to it like nothing else. I really want to finish it before an exciting trip to see my oldest friend Feb 2. I'm knitting this in Chester Farms' Cestari 2-ply in Blackberry. The color is deeper and richer in person than in the photo, but this was the best I could do without a flash on this dreary morning! Jen at Friender

Just knitting away!!

I love seeing everyone's sweaters and they make me even more excited to finish mine!! I am almost ready to start on the sleeves.
I am a bit nervous about stitching it all together, as I have never done that before, so any tips will be appreciated. I have also never really blocked anything this substantial, so any tips on that would be great too. I don't have a blocking board or pins. I am thinking I can just use some towels, but what type of pins should I get?? I don't think the straight pins that I already own will work too well.

I am using Patons classic merino wool and am using size 8 and 9 needles. I did a gauge swatch and I guess I knit pretty tightly. I always seem to have to use bigger needles.
I hope the sleeves fit my old arms too! LOL

Hoodie finished

I finished sewing mine up the other night. There are a couple more photos on my blog, they're not too good, as my husband took them!! I really like the finished hoodie, it's lovely to wear and the colour has come out so nice. In fact, I didn't choose this colour, the lady who owns the ebay shop's husband sent the wrong one by mistake, but I liked it so much, I kept it!!

I used DB aran tweed, needle sizes 4mm for the rib and 5mm for the rest. I knit the 44" size, even though I'm only a 34-6" as I wanted it to fit over other jumpers. There's plenty of room. I decided not to put any buttons/toggles on it, as I liked it open. I did toy with the idea of a zip, but I've really no idea how to put them in, so it's staying like this. I love the long sleeves, they will keep my hands warm in the cold welsh winters.

CPH - Complete

I just finished knitting CPH for my daughter (she's 13). I used a lighter, mostly cotton yarn because she's kind of a "princess & the pea" kind of kid. I'll agree with others that the fit is very slim -- I knit a smallish size on purpose, and it fits fine, but I'm a little amazed at how narrow the shoulders are and how slim the sleeves. The color in the first picture is a better match with reality. If you look on my blog, you'll see pretty much the same information, but there are progress pictures there too, if you click on the label in the side bar.

Nitty Gritty Details:

• Cascade Sierra Quatro, 80% cotton/20% wool, Green Melange (color 96) 100 grams, 191 yards, 7 skeins used.
  
• Gauge called for was 4.25 stitches/inch. I knit this on size 5 needles at a gauge of 5 stitches/inch because I liked the fabric better. (That is the ball-band gauge -- actually I'm not sure how I came to substitute this yarn for what was called for - except the girl liked the color.) To compensate, I made the 40 inch size in hopes of getting a sweater with a 34" finished size. My actual finished size was 34.5". I used vertical directions (ie knit 11 inches) for the smallest size.
  
• Vislon Activewear 22" Separating zipper, "peridot". I should have used a 18 inch zipper. I don't even know if there was one in the right length, but I had to cut this zipper and fold the ends back, which makes for some bulkiness I don't like. I sewed in the zipper by hand, using, more or less, the instructions in the big Vogue Knitting book.
  
• Other changes: I grafted the top of the hood together (kitchener stitch) and knit the ribbing all in one go. The pattern called for casting off the top of the hood, then knitting the front ribbing, then sewing a seam which would be on the "top" of the hood. I thought my way would be better, which it was, mostly. But I also broke one of my favorite needles - size 3 bamboo needles aren't meant for cramming 300+ stitches on. After I rescued my stitches (the needle broke "inside" a row), I used two needles but knit the ribbing all in one piece.

Loving My First Cable project

This is a great first cable project and I'm really enjoying it. I'm using Cascade 220 Quatro (more details on my blog) and it's going quickly. Only hiccup so far is that I got all the way up the first sleeve and hit 20 inches but didn't have as many stitches as the pattern suggested. It was a full ten rows off! Never had row gauge be an issue before, but learn something new everyday.

New to KAL

Hi, I've just joined the KAL. I have managed to knit a fair bit of this, but I think I'll be making another hoodie sometime soon. I live in north wales, united kingdom. Above is a photo of my progress so far. I'm using Debbie Bliss Aran Tweed, and it's knitting up really nice.

Well, Happy New Year, everyone, from your KAL hostess Jeanne B.! This is so exciting! We have 24 active members so far and six more have been sent invitations. I'm glad to see everyone chatting merrily away and sharing goodies.

I suppose I should update the progress on my own CPH. Ack! Stalled out! It's almost embarrassing to admit. Blame it on last-minute holiday knitting, which, by the way, I'm still finishing up *blush*. Right now, my CPH has four inches of ribbing and that's it. Do I count more points because I'm doing the fronts and back simultaneously on circulars? I plan to pick it up again before the end of the month. In the meantime, you all just keep having a good time and keep knitting away so I can live vicariously!

Progress

I have nearly done half a front(a pair of socks and two dishcloths and RSI), it has been raining here because of dead cyclone and a low meeting near here so I had a bit of extra time to knit,but it has also meant the return of my shoulder RSI and sore fingers but boy am I having fun.
I may finish a front this weekend and will show the change I made to pattern to make it fit better and be more of a snuggly cardi for me!

CPH Finished

I finished my CPH on Saturday night! It's not blocked yet; the sleeves are a bit tight, and I'm hoping blocking will help. Everyone who recommended that you knit a size up on this sweater was right.

2 sleeves down...

Horray ,I finished the second sleeve in 3 days and I enjoyed every bit of it!

Now I can cast on for the left front,which I am going to change slightly as I want mine to overlap a bit more,cut the cold wind back a bit whie watching kids play hockey next winter.....
